Read Ahead’s new “e-mentoring” program is similar to a virtual ‘pen-pal.’ Children will have the opportunity to exchange messages every 2-3 weeks with their Read Ahead mentor during this time of remote learning. The e-mentoring program described below is an addendum to Read Ahead program permission slip that parents/guardians signed prior to their child first joining Read Ahead’s in-person mentoring program that met during lunchtime at P.S. 1 when school was operating normally.
Participation in e-mentoring is voluntary, and you have the option to decide that you do not want your child to participate!
If you would like to opt out, please contact Courtney Wong, Director, Strategic Partnerships (habla español) at cwong@readahead.org or 212-965-2294. Or, if you prefer, contact your child’s teacher or another P.S. 1 staff member. They will let Read Ahead know, and Read Ahead will stop all e-mentoring activities and communications with your child immediately!
● Students will be invited using their P.S. 1 email/Google account have access to the Google Classroom administered by Read Ahead staff. All content and messaging will be posted by Read Ahead staff only. Mentors will not have access to the Google Classroom.
● Read Ahead staff will review messages from your child’s mentor(s) before posting on Google Classroom for your child to view. Messages may include written messages, photos, and short video or audio recordings.
● Additional content on Google Classroom may include Read Ahead resources, links to selected online content, and recordings of read alouds, how-tos, etc. from Read Ahead staff and volunteers.
● Students are expected to reply to a message from their mentor within one week.
● Parents/caregivers may be needed to support their children’s participation, including accessing messages on Google Classroom and submitting messages for their mentor. Please note that some students have two mentors.
● Read Ahead’s policy is that mentors and mentees will only communicate through the Read Ahead e-mentoring program or during in-person sessions when they resume, and that contact outside of Read Ahead is not permitted.
● As with Read Ahead’s in-school program for which a permission form was already submitted for your child, the permission you grant for your child’s participation in e-mentoring is in effect until they graduate, leave their current school, or you choose to opt them out by sending a letter or email to the school or Read Ahead.
● All Read Ahead policies apply to all communications and content on Google Classroom.
