ABOUT read ahead - GRANTS Goal #1: Children as learners - parents and caregivers as teachers
Grants awarded in 2006 Child Care Solutions received a Year 3 renewal grant of $92,250 to implement early literacy training programs in child care environments. (March 2006)
A grant of $2,780 was awarded to Catholic Diocese of Syracuse to provide books for families and classroom software to support continuity to kindergarten. (March 2006) A grant of $5,000 was awarded to ESM Central School District to support early orientation for families, parent workshops, early literacy newsletter and books for kindergarten transition. (March 2006) Fayetteville-Manlius Central School District was granted $5,000 to provide tote bags, supplies and activities for incoming kindergarten students and conduct informational meetings and visits between parents, preschools and teachers. (March 2006) Lafayette Central School District received a $2,530 grant to provide backpacks of books and activities to families at spring orientation for use during the summer and in kindergarten. (March 2006) A kindergarten transition grant of $4,930 was awarded to Liverpool Central School District to hold four events for families, provide books and facilitate meetings/visits between preschool providers and teachers. (March 2006) Morrisville-Eaton Central School District received a $4,100 kindergarten transition grant to hold four family events, provide books, learning bags and supplies. (March 2006) West Genesee Central School District received a $5,000 kindergarten transition grant to conduct three child care provider forums on NYS learning standards, district curriculum and provide professional development materials. Grants awarded in 2005 A grant of $2,500 was awarded to Child Care Solutions to sponsor the 2005 Fall Conference: "Successful Kindergarten Transition: Connecting families, early childhood programs and schools." (September 2005) Child Care Solutions was awarded a $6,000 grant for the implementation of literate environments by eight child care providers who attended Early Literacy Program workshops. (September 2005) Child Care Solutions and Mid-York Child Care Coordinating Council received $108,200 for the 2nd year of a grant awarded to implement early literacy training programs in child care environments and lead a community effort to implement kindergarten transition strategies. (March 2005) Grants awarded in 2004 Child Care Solutions and Mid-York Child Care Coordinating Council were awarded $103,100 to increase the availability and quality of early literacy materials and activities in child care settings, convene community partners and school districts to discuss, address and implement transition-to-kindergarten strategies. Goal #2: World-class literacy programs with a focus on family literacy
Grants awarded in 2006 The Central New York Community Foundation awarded a $56,835 grant to United Way of Central New York's Success By 6 program to support the Family Literacy Alliance of Greater Syracuse (FLAGS). The grant supports a part-time staff person to further the Alliance's work with over 71 organizations and 128 individual members to advance literacy skills in the Onondaga County area. (May 2006) Consortium for Children's Services received a $100,000 grant to expand the Even Start Family Literacy model to 24 new families on waiting lists. (March 2006) A $20,000 grant was awarded to Oneida Public Library to hire a social worker to address retention issues in ARTS Even Start Family Literacy Program. (March 2006) Partners in Learning, Inc. received a $50,000 grant for expansion of its MANOS Family Literacy Program to 18 children and their families on waiting lists or in transition from other programs. (March 2006) Grants awarded in 2005 Oneida Public Library received a $29,900 grant to expand adult literacy services to three new locations in Madison County. (November 2005) The Central New York Community Foundation awarded a $43,900 grant to United Way of Central New York's Success By 6 program to support the Family Literacy Alliance of Greater Syracuse (FLAGS). The grant supports a part-time staff person to further the Alliance's work with over 40 organizations and 60 members to advance literacy skills in the Onondaga County area. (May 2005) Literacy Volunteers of Greater Syracuse was awarded up to $50,000 to fund organizational areas such as staffing, fund development, public relations/marketing and board/staff development. (March 2005) Learning Disabilities Association of CNY was awarded $10,000 for the purchase of hardware and software for the Computer Learning Center. (March 2005) Onondaga County Public Library was awarded $10,000 to the Charles E. White Branch for the implementation of an English Language Literacy Lab. (March 2005) Partners In Learning, Inc. was awarded $17,000 to the Westside Learning Center for the purchase of computers and software for the English Language Learning Technology-Assisted Literacy Lab. (March 2005) PEACE, Inc. was awarded $8,000 to the County West Family Resource Center for the implementation of a computer lab. (March 2005) Rescue Mission Alliance was awarded $5,000 to the Motivational Learning Center for the purchase of a computer, projector and educational software. (March 2005) Town of DeWitt/Parks and Recreation was awarded $15,000 to People In Action, a program at Springfield Gardens, for the purchase of new hardware and software to improve the Project Family computer lab. (March 2005) The Learning Place was awarded up to $50,000 to fund organizational areas such as strategic planning, new staff positions, board/staff development and technology. (November 2004) Oneida Public Library received a $1,000 grant to pilot WorkKeys to address workplace readiness in their Focusing on Family Literacy program. (November 2004) Literacy Volunteers of Greater Syracuse was granted $7,300 for 'consulting services for organizational assessment.' (June 2004) A $6,500 grant was made to The Learning Place for 'consulting services for organizational assessment.' The grant supports a part-time staff person to further the Alliance's work with over 40 organizations and 60 members to advance literacy skills in the Onondaga County area. (May 2004) Onondaga-Cortland-Madison BOCES was awarded $10,140 to implement The Literacy Works program, a comprehensive literacy program pairing adult education with language-building activities for children, while also helping families learn how to access community resources. (February 2004) Oneida Public Library was awarded $8,800 to implement the Focusing on Family Literacy program which provides lessons in literacy, health and fitness education to low-income families. (February 2004) Onondaga County Public Library was awarded $38,000 to develop and implement an interactive literacy series for young children and their parents entitled Read and Play at seven Onondaga County public library sites. (February 2004) Salvation Army was awarded $5,460 to train teachers in seven licensed daycare centers to be more effective in providing fundamental literacy activities to the children and their families. (February 2004) Syracuse City Schools was awarded $6.380 to conduct early childhood forums to inform parents and early childcare providers of New York State standards, Syracuse City School District curricula and expectations for children entering kindergarten, as well as provide professional development resources and children's books.
